This year I thought I was ready! Really ready! I trained hard by working out, surfing a lot, eating right...
And I thought putting on a wet wetsuit was bad!!
The first few waves I paddled for didn't materialize. There was absolutely no push at all! Then a little girl with braces caught one on the outside and rode it all the way in. (Man! I wish I only weighed 70 pounds!) There were some longboarder chicks in the heat who seemed to be having better luck, too. I was surprised that I was able to catch the three waves I did. (They were all close outs. Bummer.)
It was so bad, I was laughing when I tried for some of the waves that just rolled by. I was really cracking up when I got out of the water. All that effort and training and work, for a 20min heat of slop!! It's pretty funny when you think about it! I mean, at that point, there was nothing else I could do but just try to stay positive and have a good time with it. Right?
Of course, as soon as the heat ended a big set came in. Which just made me laugh even harder!!
Tom from Surf City Adventure Tours!!
Tom from SCAT had surfed the day before and had the same thing happen in his heat; no waves. It was just like that, inconsistent. Some heats got waves, others did not.
At the end I was pleasantly surprised with a 4th place medal and a bag of killer swag! It was all good and turned out to be a great day had by all!! And then there was the after party.... Need I say more?
I want to say a big "surfer thank you" to all the people who came out to support and also to my sponsors; Surf City Adventure Tours and Malu Sunglasses. Thanks for believing in me!
Teri
P.S. I also wanted to congratulate my friend, Robin, for taking 4th in his division. This guy kills it on a longboard!!
Go get em Robin!
